There are many people with different needs, there is no one ideal survey software for everyone. Here are a few typical user segments:
If you run a website and need to collect emails from your visitors, you don’t need to to use questionnaire software. Rather look for a tool which is dedicated exactly for your intention.
To collect emails for future newsletters: if you use MailChimp for newsletters, you can use the Mailchimp’s form. Similar features provide most emailing or CRM tools – MailerLite, HubSpot, ConstantContant, ConvertKit, GetResponse, and others. Many of them offer their WordPress plugin so you don’t need to be a techie to install it on your web.
You can also embed a Google Form and the answers will be stored directly to your google sheet. This can be a great way for further automation (new answer > send thank you email > save to your CRM > send follow up, etc.). Microsoft offers a very similar service with the Office365.
You may collect data for other purposes – for example, if you collect contact information for your giveaway and pick the winner in random drawing software, you can use the widget provided from the Random Picker system which will directly store data in the giveaway project.
There are tons of different online services to collect answers from your customers or website visitors. We tested several most popular tools. The free versions are usually limited by the number of respondents (100), questions and provide only basic functions. But they will work for you if you need a simple and short questionnaire.
SurveyMonkey is the most popular survey tool for many individuals and companies. The Basic plan is for free and includes only 10 questions in a questionnaire and 100 respondents. To have a question or page skip logic, randomization, branding or other advanced features, you need to pay $50 USD per month (1000 respondents) or more. The system is very user-friendly and the survey builder is easy to use and we can recommend it even for beginners. (link)
Another popular survey software is SurveyGizmo. We like the way it works and is very similar to SurveyMonkey in most aspects. You can have up to 3 concurrent questionnaires with an unlimited number of questions for free, each free questionnaire can collect up to 100 respondents. The Collaborator plan is $25 USD / month and doesn’t have the respondent limit. The questionnaire builder is easy and straightforward. (link)
This tool provides nice data entry for respondents, the questions are rolling away after each answer. The builder is also a little bit different from the previous systems, but very intuitive too. Typeform offers a free plan with 100 respondents per month (across all surveys). If you need more, you will pay 25 EUR/month. (link)
Another great tool that provides basic features for free (100 respondents/month) with an easy but robust questionnaire builder. You will pay a reasonable fee $19 USD/month if you need more responses, skip logic, own branding. (link)
This handsome tool is not dedicated only to questionnaires. You can collect any data from the forms. The best thing – it’s completely free, no limits. That’s the reason why you can see it everywhere. Your data will be stored directly into your google sheet. The main weakness – it is not a survey tool and many common survey features are missing. But if you only want to collect simple feedback from your customers, it will work for you perfectly.
There are many other online survey tools which provide similar functionalities:
CrowdSignal (formerly Polldaddy)
Market researchers, the lords of questionnaires need super customization options in all aspects. I was one of them and I can tell you, it’s really a hard job to find some which can meet all your needs. You need a very advanced questionnaire skip logic, rotations, piping, and randomization on several levels (blocks, pages, on-page blocks, questions, answers). The system must provide internal and dummy variables, various collection channels for samples, connection to panels, support for multi-country fieldwork and many other features.
Here is some recommended professional survey software:
As you expect, software from this segment can be very expensive. Customers usually pay a flat fee depending on your company size and a fee based on the annual volume (number of questionnaires).
